Ready As F*ck: Insecure Season 1 Recap
Insecure by far is the realest show that has ever graced my screen. It is relatable on some many levels and speaks to all us on a spiritual level. If you write the show off and say you “just don’t get it”, well b*tch it isn’t for you *cues Solange’s F.U.B.U*. Issa Rae and co will bless our souls once again with tonight’s season 2 premier. Below is the SparkNotes from season 1. You’re welcome.
We are introduced to the main character, Issa, who works at a non-profit that brings programs to the hood schools. In said non-profit, she is the only black employee. It’s her 29th birthday and wants to make her last year in her 20s a “give zero f*cks” year. Her outlet to release her daily frustrations is to rap in the mirror. Issa has been in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend, Lawrence, and they have been living together for 5 years, who we briefly see lying in bed. Because it’s her birthday, she gets a message from her ex, Daniel. We are introduced to Issa’s best friend, Molly, a successful lawyer with an unsuccessful dating life. Issa is contemplating ending things with Lawrence as she fills the relationship has been stuck in neutral for a long time. To put icing on the cake, Lawrence didn’t do anything for Issa’s birthday so she responds to Daniel message. Molly’s coworker gets engaged which makes her even more aware of her singleness; might I add, the coworker is Asian and her fiancé is black. Issa has been thinking about Daniel, browsing his social media when she comes across a post of an open mic; hoping he’ll be there, Issa convinces Molly to go. While there, Molly meets Jared and they hit it off. Daniel is indeed at the open mic and gets Issa to go on stage. Two words: Broken. P*ssy. Issa was referring to Molly’s lady bits as the reason she is having dating trouble. Molly understandably gets upset with Issa. Issa drops Molly off at home and ventures to Daniel’s house. There they make out and he insists he isn’t looking for a relationship. Issa leaves, goes back to Molly’s and they make up.
Issa and Molly go to brunch to discuss the evening before. While there, Lawrence calls Molly looking for Issa as she didn’t come home. Of course, Molly doesn’t answer because that’s what best friends are for. Lawrence then calls his friend for some support but he’s too preoccupied watching a basketball to pay Lawrence any mind. Issa and Molly go out for a mani and pedi where Molly discusses dating apps with Issa. After their girls’ day, Issa attempts to go back to her apartment but goes to the store instead where she runs into Lawrence. Lawrence was there buying Issa birthday décor while Issa was buying toiletries. He attempts to make a scene but Issa shut it down. Issa goes back to Molly’s and reveals she kissed Daniel. Back at work, Issa presents an activity for the kids to her coworkers. They hijack the presentation with some racially insensitive suggestions. Issa has conversation with her boss who questions how dedicated Issa is to her job. Lawrence throws away the birthday décor he bought and has a brief conversation with his neighbor. So, he’s neighbor is a blood and replaces the C’s in words to B’s. Molly goes on a date that seems to be going well. When they leave the restaurant the guy whispers asking if she’s trying to f*ck (men are seriously the worst). Molly runs into Jared while walking her dog. Issa finally goes home. She and Lawrence make awkward small talk.
Things are still awkward between Issa and Lawrence. Lawrence is trying to be in the work force again but is having difficulty landing a job. A black intern starts at Molly’s firm and she makes a point to introduce herself. Issa overhears her coworkers talking sh*t about her beach day idea for the kids and finds out secret emails have been circulating regarding the topic. Issa vents to Lawrence about it and tells her she must prove them wrong. We find out that Jared isn’t college educated and works at a rent a car joint. The girls go to a mutual friend’s house party where everyone meets Jared. The beach day was a complete success and Issa’s coworkers are either salty or trying to take credit as well. Molly finally is accepted into The League, a dating app for professionals. Lawrence makes Issa dinner so they can talk. When she spills food on the couch, she has flashbacks of all the memories she and Lawrence share on the couch. They have a heart to heart and decide to make the relationship work. Before Molly’s first League date, she calls Jared to break things off with him by saying she’s not looking for a relationship. Issa and Lawrence get rid of couch.
The second scene in this episode shows how awkward shower sex is. Issa and Lawrence then go shopping for a new couch. Molly goes on a date and everything seems to be going well until she mentions he didn’t text her when he got home (yeah, he’s done with her). Daniel pops up at Issa’s job to apologize for what happened in her car. Issa then calls Molly to tell her about Daniel coming to her job unannounced. One of the partners at Molly’s law firm asks her to have a chat with the new black intern, Rashida. We all know it’s because she and Molly are both black. Issa is planning a career day for the kids. When someone in the arts cancels, her coworker suggests asking Daniel to participate since he’s a producer. Molly goes on a date with another guy and seems to be going swimmingly, which means it’s headed for disaster. Lawrence asks Issa how career day is coming along and she neglects to tell him Daniel will be participating. Molly goes the partner’s office and expresses that she should speak to Rashida instead as Molly thinks her message will hold more weight. Tasha, the bank teller, randomly sees Lawrence in food court and they have lunch together. Daniel goes to career day discloses to the kids that Issa inspired him to pursue music. He also tells them that Ms. Issa has bars. Molly confronts Issa about Daniel being at career day and reminds Issa she’s in a relationship. And of course, the kids find the YouTube video of her “Broken P*ssy* performance.
Lawrence sees the video and thinks it's hilarious. He assures Issa that the kids will forget after the weekend but KIDS NEVER FORGET! Molly is still seeing the lawyer, Chris, she met on The League. When he leaves for work, she suggests he can leave a suit at her house and pushes that she would like for him to be her date at her coworker’s engagement party; he concedes and agrees to go with her. Issa goes to Molly’s job, shows her the video in hopes she can pursue legal action against whoever posted it. The problem is she doesn’t know who posted the video. Both Molly and Daniel help Issa is figuring out who posted the video. Lawrence meets up with his friend that says he’s going to get married. He asks the friend how he knew his fiancé was the one. Molly calls Jared asking if he knows who posted the video while Daniel isn’t having any luck finding the culprit. Issa is really stressing out about it so Daniel asks her to come into the studio to relax and wait until rush hour is over before she makes her way home. To Molly’s surprise, Chris finally shows up at the engagement party. When Molly introduces him to her friends/coworkers, Chris says he’s her boyfriend. When they have a moment alone, Molly asks Chris if he was serious and he reveals he only said it to help her out. Molly asks Chris to leave. Tasha pops up at Best Buy and essentially asked Lawrence on a date, he declines. Once everyone leaves the studio, Daniel encourages Issa to step in the booth, she does. After Chris leaves the party, Molly gets drunk and ends up at Jared’s house. Daniel and Issa converse about why they never gave their relationship a real chance then had sex. Issa immediately regrets it.
After he rendezvous with Daniel, Issa drives home and sits in her car running the scenario of her telling Lawrence what just happened. In reality, she doesn’t tell him. Lawrence shows Issa the video has been deleted and she cries saying how grateful she is for him. She tries to have sex with him but keeps having flashbacks of her shenanigans with Daniel. Molly wakes up on Jared’s couch. He expresses he’s not for the games she’s playing and they have sex. Issa tries soothing her guilt of cheating by making Lawrence breakfast and suggests they go on a date. Molly tells Issa about Jared. During their date, Issa and Lawrence go ring shopping. Molly decides to make dinner for Jared. While they eat, they share dirt from their past. Jared opens up about messing around with a guy-one time, one guy. Molly tells the girls. Lawrence calls Issa to say he has an interview with a tech startup. Molly can’t let go of Jared’s past and breaks things off with him, again. Issa tells Molly she has sex with Daniel; she instructs her not to tell Lawrence and move on. Issa goes home and has sex with Lawrence. While she’s sleep, he goes to the bathroom, trips over her bag and her phone falls out. He sees a message from Daniel.
Issa goes dress shopping for fundraiser with Molly. During the shopping trip, Issa proclaims that she will now be miss give all the fucks. While with coworkers, Molly runs into an old college friend, Crystal; her RA from freshman year to be exact. She and Molly reminisces of their wild college days and Crystals says she changed her life around when she began going to therapy. Lawrence was offered the tech job on the spot and Issa is super excited for him. But Lawrence is contemplating declining the job and working on his app instead; Issa suggests he takes the job and work on his app at night. As everyone is preparing for the fundraiser, Molly tells Issa of her encounter with Crystal. Issa proposes Molly tries therapy which offends Molly. Daniel shows up at the fundraiser uninvited. Both Molly and Issa sees him and Molly goes talk to him. When he doesn’t get the hint to leave, Issa talks to him. Daniel wanted to know why Issa would treat him like he’s just any nigga and she reveals he was just an itch she wanted to scratch (ouch); Lawrence sees the exchange. Daniel finally leaves. Justin, the kids’ teacher, tries flirting with Molly but she wasn’t having it. Lawrence converses with Daniel while he waited for valet to bring his car. Lawrence asks what connection Daniel has with the organization; he says he doesn’t have a connect anymore. When the fundraiser comes to a close, Issa and Molly argue about their f*cked up personal lives. Molly storms off and goes to Jared’s to reconcile but he didn’t want to. Issa arrives home and Lawrence confronts her about Daniel. He flips out and leaves.
