Degrassi: 15 Years, 15 Moments
On Oct 14th, 2001 Canada blessed us with the beloved Degrassi: The Next Generation, a soap opera of sorts that follows a group of middle school kids into high school as we follow all the drama they've endured. This show was the illest. Degrassi is one of those shows near and dear to my heart. When the show began, I was the same age (11/12) as the main characters so it was super relatable. Degrassi has carried me through middle school, high school, and college, hell even through my early 20s-LAWD. My love for the show is so real, I own the first 6 seasons on DVD (only seasons 1-6 because the show began to phase out MY characters and bring in new mfs-no). Well, last month I took the liberty of watching those said seasons and it was the best decision I’ve made in a while. As an adult watching Degrassi, I literally open-mouthed cackled at some of the “issues” these kids had. I also realized how deep my hatred for Emma and Ellie is even after all these years and still cried at some scenes-RIP JT. In celebration of its 15th anniversary, here are my picks for the 15 most memorable moments from seasons 1-6:
Season 1, Episode 1&2: “Mother & Child Reunion”-The series started off with a bang. Emma met this guy online named Jordan only to find it was a grown ass man. I was waiting for Chris Hansen to come from behind the curtain asking “Jordan” if he found the place okay?
Season 1, Episode 8: “Secrets and Lies”- In this episode, Ashley finds out that her dad is gay and his business partner was actually his partner in life. Given how old I was watching this, I didn't quite understand what being gay meant and thought it to be an anomaly. Now watching this as an adult, I didn’t even bat an eye.
Season 1, Episode 15: “Jagged Little Pill”- Am I wrong for loving that Ashley popped a pill though, then calling Paige a hag? That’s what I thought.
Season 2, Episode 1&2: “When Doves Cry”- We are introduced to Craig Manning who's father is abusive all around. Luckily his step father welcomed him with open arms when he was finally able to escape. The dynamic between Craig and his father always made me sad.
Season 2, Episode 7&8: “Shout”- Since season 1, I’ve had a love/hate relationship with Paige, but she didn’t deserve being raped man.
Season 2, Episode 14: “Careless Whisper”- We learn that Marco is gay, his struggle/coming to terms with who he is.
*Season 3 was the most LIT season
Season 3, Episode 3: “U Got The Look”-Probs one of my fav eps in the whole series, when Manny glowed up. I especially enjoyed this episode because I can remember having that moment when I didn’t want to be seen as “cute” anymore, granted I didn't have that moment until college but I definitely get it.
Season 3, Episode 7: “Should I Stay or Should I Go?”- Ashley and Craig are an item and she’s ready to do the damn thing. Of course Craig being a teenage boy, he tells Spinner who starts making slick jokes in front of Ash. She's pressed, as she should be, but of course in true f*ck boy fashion, Craig goes into the arms of Manny (insert upside down emoji face)
Season 3, Episode 8: “Whisper to a Scream”- So we get more into Ellie’s story. Her dad leaves for another army tour and she's left with her alcoholic mom. Ellie’s way of dealing with stress is by cutting herself. Yikes
Season 3, Episode 14-15: “Accidents Will Happen”- Continuing from ep 7, Manny gets pregnant from her shenanigans with Craig. Mfs think they can keep the baby until Emma suggests they babysit Jack to get some hands on training. Manny aborts the mission (pun intended).
Season 4, Episode 7&8: “Time Stands Still”- Seriously, this is the only episode that matters this season; when Drake I mean Jimmy “No Lining” Brooks gets shot.
Season 5, Episode 1&2: “Venus”- After starring in Kevin Smith’s movie last season, Manny decides she wants to be an actress. After getting turned down for a role because she’s “fat”, she goes to some house party and drowns her sorrows in booze only to be taken advantage of by creep-ass Peter. He films her and coax her into giving him some Girls Gone Wild footage. He’s definitely one of those characters that NEVER grew on me.
Season 5, Episode 4- “Foolin’”: LIBERTY.IS.PREGNANT!!! And J.T. is the pappy!!!
Season 6, Episode 9&10: “What’s it Feel Like to be a Ghost”- Craig is all about his music and living the rockstar lifestyle including indulging in the nose candy.
Season 6, Episode 11: “Rock This Town”- NOT J.T.!!!
Season 3, Episode 16:“Take on Me”- Because The Breakfast Club
Season 3, Episode 17: “Don't Dream it's Over”- Everyone hates Rick for his abuse toward Terri but Terri still loves him. She decides it’s time for everyone to get over it and invites Rick on an outing with the group. Rick gets dissed by everyone (duh), Terri runs after him and he damn near kills her when he pushes her and she lands head first on a rock-lovely.
Season 4, Episode 11&12: “Voices Carry”- Craig goes nuts when Ashley refuses his proposal, come to find out he's bipolar-ah yes, that would explain it.
Season 4, Episode 14&15: “Secret”- Emma “Thee Worst” Nelson gets that nasty woman's disease from messing around with Jay, all for a plastic bracelet. K
Implore you to re-watch this gem. The series can be found on YouTube if you don’t want to cough up the coins. You’re welcome.
